Durango’s bear-proof trash can program sees success

The city of Durango is taking steps to prevent bears from rummaging through the trash.

Many residents there have reported more bear sightings in recent years. In 2018, crews rolled out 600 full automated wildlife-resistant trash containers around the city. Now, they’ve started phase two of the project.

The containers will unlock automatically when they’re dumped into a garbage truck and lock again when they’re put down. City officials say the containers have cut bear-human interactions in half.
