SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe County deputies had a mysterious crash on their hands last month. A car was wrecked, no one was inside, but soon they found the driver hiding.
The arrest was caught on camera on June 30 on New Mexico State Road 14 and Camino Bajo in lapel and dash-cam video released to KRQE News 13. According to an arrest report, a woman told medics she almost ran over a man lying in the roadway. That man was identified as Charles Montoya.
Deputies spot Montoya, the car’s owner, who says he’s “chilling out.” But to deputies, it looks more like a game of hide and seek with Montoya hiding under a large shady tree.
Not able to safely stand, swaying and slurring, according to deputies, they sat Montoya in front of a cruiser.
“I have not had anything to drink,” Montoya said.
After a back-and-forth on how much booze he had, Montoya eventually said, “I accept all responsibility.”
He was transported to the emergency room for an elevated heart beat. According to the arrest report, Montoya was “acting agitated” and used profane language, even going on a “racial rant.”
The 39-year-old was booked into jail for DWI, careless driving, and for not immediately reporting the accident.
Charges will be pursued once his blood test results are returned.
