The driver who hit and killed a 12-year-old girl at a Cleveland Middle School crosswalk has been charged one year later.

Last March, police say 76-year-old Revi Pexa was driving anywhere from 37 to 40 mph, switched lanes, and then hit Eliza Almuina.

Pexa says he tried to stop in time after seeing her, but it was too late. Now, Pexa has been charged with careless driving for the incident.

The District Attorney’s Office didn’t say specifically why they moved forward with charges and why it took so long. All they said was that Pexa was driving in a careless, inattentive, or imprudent manner,” which qualifies as careless driving.
