Trees that line a highway in Taos are about to get the axe, literally, and residents are not happy.
Department of Transportation crews are working along State Road 68 north of 518, installing new signs, sidewalks and bike lanes.
The project’s goal is to make the area more pedestrian, bicycle and disability-friendly. The project includes removing greenery along the roadway.
Some citizens are not happy about it. They say these trees are part of Taos’ charm.
DOT says while the trees will be cut down, they will be replanted and irrigation systems put in.
