WILTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A dog is being remembered as a hero after alerting his owner that his house was on fire.

Officials say the fire broke out at 701 Route 9 around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The dog apparently woke up his sleeping owner, who had some trouble getting out of the burning house at first.

Several crews worked in the bitter cold to put out the flames.

According to the Wilton Fire Chief, the owner is going to be fine, but unfortunately, the dog didn’t make it out alive.
