Demonstrators rally for immigrant rights on Cinco de Mayo

A group of demonstrators celebrated Cinco de Mayo by rallying for immigrant rights in Albuquerque. As many around the state celebrate the holiday, Vecinos United wants to remind all New Mexicans of the troubles happening at our southern border with Mexico.

They’re hoping to get the attention of Congress by asking them to investigate the separation of children from their parents at the border thoroughly.

“Tearing children apart from their parents is an obvious crime and it’s cruel and unusual punishment,” said Andres Valdez with Vecinos United.

Traditionally, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French Empire in the 1700s. Sunday, Vecinos United says they’re hoping for more victories for migrant children and their parents.
