The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority will now lease water to the federal government.

This is all to keep the stretch of the Rio Grande that flows through Albuquerque from going dry.

A vote Wednesday by utility board members approved the deal $2 million deal.

They say it’s because of ongoing drought and a historically low spring runoff.

The approval means the federal Bureau of Reclamation will now lease a maximum of 20,000 acre-feet to maintain water levels through October.

As of the latest drought monitor, much of the state remained in extreme to exceptional drought.
