DA: Albuquerque officer justified for returning gunfire

News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – District Attorney Kari Brandenburg announced Thursday that Albuquerque Police Officer Lou Golson was justified in returning fire at a suspected drunk driver.

Albuquerque Police Department Officer Lou Golson was struck three times in January 2015 during a traffic stop.

It turns out, the suspect was also driving a stolen vehicle and when Golson approached the car, the man shot at him. Golson returned fire, then called for help.

The suspected drunk driver, Christopher Cook, has since pleaded guilty to what he did.

Cook was not hit by the gunfire, but an investigation must still be completed and a ruling issued.

In a letter to Albuquerque Police Chief Gordon Eden, the DA said Officer Golson was clearly acting in self defense and reacted how anyone else would.
