CYFD to create Child Wellness Center for incoming foster children

Children Youth & Families Department will soon have a new campus to better help children removed from their homes.

The State Board of Finance approved the acquisition of $7.7 million property along with a $10.4 million for renovations.

The facility will be located on Indian School and Washington.

The Department says it will become a Child Wellness Center, a new space for children to temporarily stay before they’re placed in foster homes.

“What we want is something that’s comforting to these kids, to the kids and our staff. We want it to feel like when they’re coming into the state’s custody, that it’s not in a big scary cold building” said CYFD Cabinet Secretary Monique Jacobson.

CYFD is expected to complete the purchase later this month.

It also hopes to move its Bernalillo County offices to the small campus.

They hope to start the move-in process by December.
