A woman pleaded guilty to a crime spree that left a retired Las Cruces police officer dead.

In her plea agreement, Trista Schlaefli admitted driving a stolen pickup truck from Colorado with Daniel Lowell last year.

State Police say the two were stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint, but ran and carjacked another driver.

They say Lowell hit and killed J.R. Stewart, who was riding his motorcycle.

Stewart was a 35-year veteran of the force.

Schlaefli faces up to 15 years in federal prison for the carjacking and faces life in prison for Stewart’s death.

Lowell pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled for January.
