It was a strange scene, a suspected drunk driver trying to put out a fire after his car went up in flames at a Walmart. It was all caught on camera.
Santa Fe Police say Royce Sutton was seen on security video last week, when he parked his car in the back of the Walmart. Within minutes, his car starts to smoke.
Sutton: “I put the key in. I turned it. As soon as I turned it to get away from there, it blew up. It just went boom!”
Security video from the Walmart shows Sutton attempting to put out the flames. When police got to the scene, they knew something was off.
Officer: “No, but I’m saying, you have slurred speech like you’ve been drinking.”
Sutton: “I do. I’m not lying to you, I do.”
According to the criminal complaint, police found two empty Budweiser cans and a small bottle of vodka next to the car. Sutton struggled to finish the sobriety test and even pleaded with the officer to give him a break.
His plea turned out to be unsuccessful. Sutton then tried to change his story.
Sutton: “I only had one beer when I got here.”
Officer: “Well, you’re impaired right now, so.”
Sutton: “Yeah right now, but I wasn’t driving impaired.”
Unable to convince the officer of his innocence, Sutton thinks back on his narrow escape.
Sutton: “I was worried about the people on the side of the Walmart.”
Officer: “Yeah, especially that close to the gas tanks.:
Sutton: “That’s what scared the hell out of…then I tried to open the trunk. Then my fingers caught fire. There were flames shooting out of the trunk.”
Sutton blew a 0.14 on the breathalyzer. Santa Fe Police say he has three prior DWI charges out of South Carolina.
