Trial begins for daycare owners accused of leaving toddlers in hot car

Crime

The trial is underway for two daycare workers charged with child abuse.

Mary and Sandi Taylor are charged with leaving 1-year-old Maliyah and 3-year-old Aubriauna in a hot car in July 2017.

Wednesday in court, the Taylors wiped away tears while video played of an officer’s attempt to save Maliyah.

“As I approached them, I noticed a small child appeared to be wet. Her clothing and all over her person. I noticed her eyes were open but there were no signs of motion,” Corporal Amador Lujan said.

In opening statements, prosecutors asked the jury to pay attention to “inconsistent statements made by the defendants,” including the timeline.

They say the Taylors claim the girls were in the car for 20 minutes when really it was closer to three hours.

The defense claims it’s just a tragic accident at what was a well-run daycare.
