DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) – Attorneys gave their opening statements in the trial of the Colorado father, Mark Redwine, accused of killing his son Dylan. Redwine is charged with second-degree murder and child abuse following the death of his 13-year-old son in November 2012 during a court-ordered visit.
Hikers found Dylan’s skull three years later and forensic experts say it had injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. Redwine told investigators that he left Dylan alone to run errands but said the boy was missing when he returned.

Redwine’s trial had been postponed nearly a dozen times since he was arrested in 2017. Last year, a judge declared a mistrial in the case stemming from allegations by the district attorney surrounding a phone call Redwine’s attorney made from the La Plata County jail.
Jury selection wrapped up Monday morning and the trial’s opening statements began afterward. If convicted Redwine faces up to 48 years in prison.
