Third suspect arrested, teen charged with murder in connection to shootings

A third person has now been arrested in connection to a series of shootings across the city of Albuquerque. One of those shootings left a man dead.

Albuquerque Police say Kalani Hodges was the final person they were looking for in this crime spree. He’s only 17 years old and is now charged with murder.

“We wanted to really get these guys off the street because they were tearing up Albuquerque, causing a lot of havoc and hurting a lot of people,” said APD Officer Simon Drobik.

Matthew Delena, Seven Long and Hodges are all behind bars now. Two of them are teenagers.

“Kalani was the last guy that we were looking for,” said Officer Drobik.

Hodges, who also goes by ‘Trips,’ was arrested late Saturday night after police say he, Delena and Long were involved in a series of shootings across the city in the last few months.

“Even though this guy’s under the age of 18, Kalani and also Seven, they’re stone cold killers,” said Officer Drobik.

The trio is accused of first shooting a teen at the Sandia Vista Apartments in August, causing the victim to crash his car, and pinning an innocent man between two vehicles.

Then in September, police say another shooting left a man dead near Washington and Lomas.

Only a few days after that, they allegedly shot and paralyzed a man at the Whole Foods on Carlisle.

Police say drugs and gang rivalry were the apparent motivation.

“What did happen to these kids that would be under the age of 18, committing violent crimes around town to kill people, over dope basically,” said Officer Drobik.

Hodges surrendered peacefully to officers and had nothing to say to our cameras Saturday night at APD headquarters. Hodges’ silence isn’t surprising to police.

“Kalani didn’t care either. If you look at his social media posts, he’s posing with guns, living that gangster lifestyle. That’s exactly what these guys were doing,” said Officer Drobik.

Police also say the trio recorded video of their crimes and sent the videos to people through Facebook.

Hodges is charged with an open count of murder.

According to court documents, confidential sources led police to Delena, Long and Hodges.
