SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating a police shooting in Santa Fe on Sunday, July 4. NMSP reports it was notified of an officer-involved shooting in Santa Fe involving NMSP.
According to the department, investigators learned around 9:20 a.m. NMSP officers were dispatched to help the Santa Fe Police Department who had responded to a man that was sitting on the Rail Runner tracks near I-25 milepost 275. Authorities say the individual pulled out a firearm at the officers, fled from SFPD, and fled on foot.
Police say the foot pursuit crossed I-25 and continued into a residential area of Santa Fe near Calle Pardo and Chaparral. At some point during the foot pursuit, NMSP reports the suspect fired at least one shot at two NMSP officers who fired back, striking the suspect at least once.
Authorities say no officers were injured in the incident and the suspect was transported to an area for non-life-threatening injuries. NMSP states that the name of the suspect will not be released until he is positively identified.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting will not be released until interviews have taken place.
