Police: Homeless man clinging to life after violent beating

Crime

Albuquerque Police is trying to find at least two suspects accused in the beating of a homeless man downtown.

It happened around 3 a.m. early Wednesday morning in front of a downtown business near 5th and Central Avenue.

Police say surveillance video from the nearby KiMo Theatre shows a small gray sedan pull up in front of a couple downtown businesses along Central. Moments later, at least two people can be seen in the video getting out of a car, including a man in dark clothing and a man in a white shirt.

The suspect in the white shirt can be seen walking toward the doorway of the Deep Space Coffee shop, where police believe the homeless man was sleeping.

“The guy walks over to this cubby hole here and you can kind of see him on camera,” said Drobik.

After around five seconds inside the doorway, the suspect in the white shirt can be seen on the video running back to the car. The car then drove off, heading south on Fifth Street.

Albuquerque Police say paramedics took the victim to a local hospital, where the man is said to be “clinging to life.”

“When they got him back to the hospital, the extent of his injuries were revealed, massive injuries to his head,” said Simon Drobik, and officer and spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department.

The beating happened right next door to Lindy’s Restaurant, a longtime downtown business owned by Steve Vatoseow.

“It was awful,” said Vatoseow. “We got there this morning and there was crime tape all the way across the restaurant.”

Vatoseow says he knows of the man who was injured in the beating, saying he has never had problems with the man.

“I’ve had a lot of interactions you might say with this guy over the past five years, and no, he definitely didn’t deserve what he got,” said Vatoseow. “I understand he’s in pretty bad shape so hopefully he’ll recover.”

Police now hope the surveillance video and image of the suspect’s gray sedan can help crack the case.

APD says it is not clear if the beating was random or connected to any prior history between the suspects and the victim.
