The suspect shot by police during a hostage situation along I-25 was shot in the foot.
State Police say James Kirkland blew through a Border Patrol checkpoint in Dona Ana County last month, then led multiple agencies on a chase with his wife and 7-year-old son in the car.
He stopped near Hatch, where police say he threatened to kill himself and the boy. Kirkland was taking cover behind his car, but State Police Officer Robert Ramirez was able to get a clear shot of his feet and opened fire.
That’s when other officer rushed in to rescue the boy and arrest Kirkland. He’s now facing a long list of charges including kidnapping and aggravated assault.
He was already wanted in Louisiana, where authorities had gotten a tip he had kidnapped his wife.
