A New Mexico State Police officer has been arrested on federal drug trafficking charges.

Prosecutors say 33-year-old Daniel Capehart was taken into custody by the FBI last Friday.

According to a criminal complaint, Capehart abused his position as a law enforcement officer by stealing drugs seized during arrests. He would then give the drugs to women he was interested in pursuing romantic or sexual relationships with — including a 16-year-old girl.

Capehart was assigned to patrol duty in Farmington and San Juan County.

He’s been placed on administrative leave.
