New details have been revealed about what led to a recent shooting involving State Police.

State Police say Officer Kevin Smith pulled over a blue Honda earlier this month for speeding near the Lead-Coal exit along I-25.

Jonathan Molina, 23, a passenger in the car, told the officer he was wanted and was “not going back to prison.”

As Smith tried to arrest Molina, a struggle broke out and Molina shot Smith in the leg.

The officer was eventually able to retreat back to his car and fired several shots, killing Molina.

Officer Smith, who has been with the department for four years, remains on administrative leave.
