Man accused of murdering grandmother to remain behind bars until trial

An Albuquerque man accused of murdering his own grandmother will stay behind bars until trial.

APD arrested 20-year-old Drake Bickett on Friday in connection with the death of Marilyn Gandert, whose body was found burned in the mesa near Rio Rancho back in January.

Bickett, his mother AIissa, and her roommate, Annie Rael, are accused of killing Gandert after she tried to evict them.

They became upset and police say the women beat Gandert and then Drake Bickett stabbed her to death.

Wednesday in court, the defense asked that Bickett is placed under supervision until his trial instead of being locked up as the state wanted. However, District Court Judge Charles Brown disagreed.

“I am not confident there are any conditions that will protect the community from the defendant. So you’ll be held with no bond pending disposition on this matter,” said Judge Brown.

All three suspects are facing first-degree murder charges.
