A former Bernalillo County firefighter accused of beating his elderly father, eventually leading to his death, will be locked up until trial.
Deputies spoke with 85-year-old Jose Armenta when he was hospitalized back in July. He claimed his 54-year-old son, Joseph Armenta, hit him in the ribs during an argument at their South Valley home.
Jose later died.
Last week, Joseph Armenta was charged with first-degree murder.
Wednesday in court, Judge Neil Candelaria decided to put him behind bars.
“In light of what the charges are now, the allegations contained in the criminal complaint which is quite concerning, his past history. I’m going to remand the defendant until further order of the court,” said Judge Candelaria.
Armenta was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs following the decision.
