Mailbox vandalism has neighbors requesting permanent fix

Crime

Some Albuquerque neighbors want a permanent fix after their mailboxes were vandalized yet again.

The mailbox cluster on Schumacher Street near Unser and Ladera was broken into sometime Thursday night or early Friday morning. Someone pried open the boxes and stole the mail inside.

Neighbors say someone broke into the mailbox cluster back in November too. Now, they’re asking the post office to not only fix the mailboxes but to make them more secure to prevent it from happening a third time.

“I just want help getting my mailboxes repaired so I can feel confident that I’m getting what I’m supposed to be getting. Cause right now, I don’t know what I’m getting,” said neighbor Melody Bridge.

New mailboxes should be installed in about two weeks. KRQE News 13 reached out to the post office for comment but have not heard back.

KRQE News 13 has previously reported that USPS tries to update older mailboxes that are less secure with newer ones as incidents happen.

It is unclear if this was an older mailbox.
