With the latest school shooting in Texas fresh on the minds of many, a Rio Rancho couple is worried after young thieves stole a gun from them.
Amy and Jared Lawson said the thieves didn’t seem to notice the security cameras while breaking into the truck parked in their driveway Tuesday, in a neighborhood near Unser and Northern.
“One was getting into the vehicle, one was standing behind him looking and then they had a third out in the road, looking,” Jared Lawson said.
Three people, who the couple believes to be teenagers, went through the truck’s center console and took the nine-millimeter handgun that was inside.
“The big thing is to get this firearm located and away from those kids,” Jared Lawson said.
The couple said they typically keep their cars doors locked and their firearms inside the house.
“It’s a fluke situation. You can’t account for human error. There is always a bit of human error,” Jared Lawson said.
The father of three says he left the gun in the truck that day because he attended a high school baseball game where firearms aren’t allowed. When he got home, he forgot to take it inside.
“We’re going to get criticized for leaving the firearm in the truck but we need to get [this] out there,” Jared Lawson said.
The couple said they aren’t looking to start a gun debate on the heels of the deadly school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas by a 17-year-old. The Lawsons just want the weapon out of the wrong hands.
“It’s not about even getting the gun back. It’s about getting the gun out of the hands of whoever has it and could potentially use it for something even worse than a theft,” Amy Lawson said.
The Lawsons said they aren’t sure how the thieves got inside their truck. They said there was no damage to the vehicle.
