ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)- Two members of this Lobo Football team earned Mountain West Player of The Week honors after the performances in their season opener against South Dakota. Senior Linebacker Dakota Cox and Junior Kicker Jason Sanders.
Dakota Cox earned MW Defensive Player of The Week honors after recording 14 total tackles in the South Dakota game with 9 solo tackles. He also forced a fumble with a sack and had an interception in the second half of this 48-21 win over South Dakota.
“It’s just something that proves that you can go out there and do your job and have some fun and get rewarded for it, and to get the win out there, we got the first game jitters out and now it’s just time to build on it,” said Dakota Cox.
Jason Sanders earned MW Special Teams Player of the week after going a perfect 6 for 6 in PAT’s and 2 for 2 in field goal attempts. The junior’s furthest field goal came from 27 yards out, and Sanders says there is plenty more where that came from.
“Well I mean I don’t want to brag, but in the indoor right now today I hit a 70, yeah. It’s obviously a good accomplishment but it’s one of those things you can’t let get to your head. You have to be able to take every kick one at a time,” said Jason Sanders.
