Convicted cop killer hopes to be released

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After nearly 30 years in prison, a convicted cop killer wants to be set free.

Former Sandia Labs physicist Merrill Chamberlain was sentenced to 31 years in prison for the shooting death of Albuquerque Police Officer John Carrillo.

Officer Carrillo and his partner had responded to a domestic violence call at Chamberlain’s home in the far Northeast Heights in February 1987 when Chamberlain ambushed them.

Chamberlain, who is currently at the Lea County Correctional Facility, has a hearing set for Wednesday before the State Parole Board.

It could be up to two weeks before a decision is reached on whether to release him.
