Construction to start this fall on west side road to ease traffic flow

It will be a sliver of hope for West Side commuters as the city is about to widen a popular street that people use to get to Paseo del Norte.

“I kind of like the expansion. I like the freshness of the west side and new companies coming in, especially new restaurants are very appreciated,” said Leeann Smith.

Smith has been living on Albuquerque’s West Side for six years. She says the neighborhood has seen a lot more traffic in the last few years.

“I tend to avoid it because of the narrowing of lanes, and also that it kind of dead ends near the shopping center near Coors,” she said.

City Councilor Cynthia Borrego hopes that won’t be a problem for much longer.

The three-quarter mile stretch of Paradise, between Eagle Ranch and Golf Course, will be getting a makeover.

“They’re going to add a couple of lanes, at least an HOV lane for sure,” said Borrego. “There will be a trail on the south side of this street.”

The project has been in the works since 2015. It will cost $2.5 million.

It’s a small step as westward expansion has drivers constantly searching for the quickest routes to the highways and interstates.

“West Side traffic has been a real challenge for us because this area has really boomed,” said Borrego.

A lot of west side drivers have a wishlist that starts with Paseo.

“Paseo del Norte I think really needs to be four lanes all the way out,” said Smith.

Borrego hopes Paseo del Norte and Westside Boulevard are expanded in the near future as well.

“We have to be patient but I will continue to fight to make sure this infrastructure is built,” she said.

City Councilor Borrego says construction will start in the fall and will take about 8-10 months to finish.

Paradise will stay two lanes west of Golf Course up to Unser, because that’s county property.

There’s a lot of new development along that stretch as well.
