Competency of Artesia murder suspect called into question


ARTESIA, N.M. (KRQE) – The competency of an Artesia man accused of murdering a security guard is being questioned.

Michael Evans was shot while on duty in 2012. He had just called police to report a suspicious man.

Bobby Smith, 26, was arrested for the murder, but mental health experts found him incompetent twice.

Another competency hearing is scheduled for May 18.
