City of Albuquerque honors Ben E. Keith first responders

Albuquerque Police swarmed the Ben. E. Keith warehouse earlier in November responding to reports of an active shooter.

Three men were wounded and taken to UNM Hospital.

The shooter, Waid Melton, eventually killed himself near Placitas while on the phone with officers.

Mayor Tim Keller awarded them the Hero Award for courageously stepping in.

“Without concern for their own safety they ran into a dangerous situation where most people would run from gunfire, they would be the first to run into it,” said Chief Mike Geier.

Several first responders on scene that night from both city and county agencies, in addition to UNM Hospital, were also awarded coins for their bravery.

The mayor says it highlights multiple agencies working together.
