Wind and Fire Danger will be on the rise for Monday! A storm system is going to graze New Mexico to the north and this will crank up the wind with extreme fire danger across eastern New Mexico.
Moisture is going to be limited with this storm system so only the San Juans of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado will see a shot for some snow. Accumulations look to be fairly light, but the best shot for heavier snow will be in southern Colorado. That is where Winter Weather Advisories are up for 4-8″ of snow above 7,500 feet from late tonight into early Tuesday morning.
Wind will be the big weather story for most of New Mexico on Monday. Wind gusts could reach 50-70 mph across eastern New Mexico. This is where High Wind Warnings are up from early Monday into early Tuesday afternoon. Since the wind will be cranking up and temperatures will be warmer than normal, the Fire Danger will be extremely high. So that means you do not want to do any outdoor burning with the combination of the dry conditions, high wind and warmer temps.
After the beginning of the week, temperatures look to stay warmer than normal into Friday. New Mexico could then see a storm system move into the region by next Saturday bringing back the chance for rain/mountain snow and more wind. Stay tuned!
