ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)– A ground-breaking took place Saturday on what’s described as a home away from home for kids battling cancer.
The Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico has kicked off construction on a facility near UNM Hospital where out-of-town kids and their families will be able to stay while kids receive cancer treatments, or when end-of-life care sadly becomes necessary.
It’s called Erin’s Place, named after Erin Trujeque who was diagnosed with cancer at age 12 and died just a year later.
The Children’s Cancer Fund says millions of dollars have been raised in Erin’s memory over the last three decades which is allowing the organization to serve hundreds of families each year.
Organizers behind Erin’s Place say since Albuquerque is home to New Mexico’s only pediatric cancer specialists it’s important for families to have a comfortable place to stay while they are in town.
