SANTA FE (KRQE) – A teacher nominated as one of Santa Fe’s most inspirational teachers is now facing child abuse charges.

The teacher, Marcy Slaughter, teaches 8th grade English at De Vargas Middle School.

Police tell the Santa Fe New Mexican that Slaughter threw paperback books at students after they didn’t follow instructions following a fire drill. The books hit several students.

The students reported it to the principal and the district has put Slaughter on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

Slaughter was set to be honored this week for being a “teacher who inspires”. No word if she’ll still get the award.
