Cameras added to ART stations to help police fight crime

Transit cameras at ART stations will now be used as crime fighting tools.

Mayor Tim Keller announced a new partnership between ART and Albuquerque police.

Starting Tuesday, 88 cameras on stations in the ART corridor can now be accessed by APD’s Real-Time Crime Center.

Chief Mike Geier says they can now serve as eyes for officers responding to a scene.

“Dispatchers get that information out in real time to the field officers who are able to be more efficient and more effective,” Chief Geier said.

The cameras were funded by allotted public safety dollars as part of the original ART project.

Each Albuquerque Rapid Transit station also has an emergency 911 button.
