Friday, the BioPark celebrated World Lion Day, highlighting worldwide campaigns to save the species.

Visitors learned about the dangers facing the majestic beasts in Africa and India, including shrinking habitats and trophy hunting.

Zookeepers say lions thrive best when living in groups.

“Lions being the only social cat of all the cats, they like to live with other lions and so higher numbers they’re more comfortable with,” senior zookeeper Valerie Chavez said.

The BioPark’s two lions, Kenya and Dixie, are 4-year-old siblings.

They came from the San Diego Zoo two years ago.
