Bill to protect skunks, coyotes dies in committee

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A push to add skunks and coyotes to a list of protected animals has died in a committee.

Sen. Jeff Steinborn of Los Cruces sponsored the bill in an effort to list coyotes and skunks as fur-bearing animals that can only be hunted or trapped with a license.

The Senate Conservation Committee voted 6 to 3 against the bill, citing concerns about state costs of managing skunk and coyote populations.
