Thursday, dozens of couples will head to the courthouse to tie the knot, marking Valentine’s Day as their wedding day. The ninth floor of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court will be converted into a welcoming wedding venue, complete with flowers and décor.
For the 19th year, Metro Court will be holding its popular “Wedding Central.” Judges will be taking a break from their court cases to wed couples for free. They say they enjoy doing this as it gives them a break from the cases of crime they so often see on a daily basis.
“Often times, we see the more challenging times in peoples lives. We enjoy those moments where it’s happy and everybody is in love. It really is enjoyable for us, too,” said Judge Frank Sedillo.
Metro Court officials say there are more than 100 people scheduled to be wed. While that may seem like a lot, judges say they will treat each wedding as if it were the only one today.
“Everybody deserves that special occasion. We try to make it special for everyone. We’ll have a place where they can take pictures. We’ll provide them with a copy of the ceremony. We’ll provide them with a commemorative certificate,” said Judge Sedillo.
Walk-ins are also welcome and will be seen on a first-come, first served basis. All couples need to do is bring their marriage license.
For information on how to obtain a marriage license, please contact the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office at (505) 468-1243, or visit the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office website.
Wedding Central runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 14. To schedule an appointment, please call (505) 841-8287.
