They’re on Bernalillo County’s logo and it’s even the county’s mascot, but you might not know the story behind the county sheep.
Bernalillo County released a mini-documentary explaining the history of the unique New Mexico Dahl sheep and how they became the brand for the county and mascot with “BernCo Bernie.”
“Coronado brought several hundred sheep and cattle with him, basically ‘food on the hoof,'” the documentary states.
The breed is no longer used for food. Instead, the documentary shows the county’s conservation efforts.
