ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Call it a growth industry. From actors, musicians and sports stars to college students and hipsters everywhere, the beard craze has taken off. One Albuquerque man is building a business around it.
Kyle Malone is owner of Big Wood Beard Combs, and with his woodworking skills, he has the art of beard comb making down to a science.
This business was Malone’s brainchild after he got a wood comb for Christmas.
“I knew I could make a better one,” he said. “It’s definitely a niche market, in a sense. Not everyone has a beard. But I think it’s definitely hyped up a little bit,” Malone added.
Stars like George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling have sported beards. Once again, beards shined this year at the Golden Globes. Tuesday night, Albuquerque hosted a beard competition at La Cumbre Brewing Company with 32 contestants taking place.
As long as the fluff fascination continues, Malone’s business will keep growing.
“We do spend a lot of time making them, and we really do care about making a quality product,” Malone said. “Wood combs are great, especially handmade ones. They’re cool, they’re unique,” he said.
Malone believes when it comes to combs, wood is better than plastic. “The great thing about buying a wood comb is it actually saves your natural oils into the comb, so it redistributes the oils throughout your hair. It’s actually healthier for your hair,” Malone said.
“For the standard Big Wood comb, we’re asking $35 right now, which I think is a very fair price, especially for how much time we put into it and the really cool wood that we use, and just the fact that it’s handmade here in Albuquerque,” Malone said.
His business also offers other beard care products.
“New projects are going to be coming out of the shed and I look forward to showing everybody,” he said.
