BCSO looks at ‘Grappler Police Bumper’ to help catch fleeing vehicles

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department along with other police agencies has been dealing with a growing number of police chases and a new device might help.

The sheriff’s department got a demonstration Thursday of the Grappler Police Bumper.

Law enforcement can deploy it if they’re behind a fleeing vehicle and basically grab on to it and hold it.

Once it’s deployed, it acts as a tow strap and deputies can then force the fleeing vehicle to stop.

A spokesperson says the sheriff is always looking for new tools to keep the community safe, but haven’t yet decided if they will use it.

The department already has the star chase system which shoots a GPS tracker on a vehicle so they can track it after a chase.

Since implementing the system last year, the department has used it 50 times, with 43 successful tags.

They say it’s helped them recover more than 300,000 in stolen cars and contraband.
