The Bernalillo County Fire Department is preparing its newest cadets for the fire academy.
BCFD says this is the first of two academies the department will hold this year.
Officials say high retirement rates are driving up the need for more cadets.
Tuesday, a class of future firefighters demonstrated their physical strength and endurance in a pre-academy test.
BCFD cadets will complete an 18-week academy.
