CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Bats caused a scare at a New Mexico mall over the weekend in Carlsbad.

Shoppers made a quick exit when several dozen bats briefly took over the mall on Saturday. The animals made their way to the center atrium. Store owners shut their doors and stayed inside while animal control moved in with nets to try to capture the animals.

While bats are known for roaming around the caverns, they’re not often spotted this far from home, which is about 20 miles.
