Balloon Fiesta ranks among country’s best cultural festivals

New Mexicans won’t be surprised by this next story: USA Today ranks the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta as one of the country’s 10 Best Cultural Festivals.

The Balloon Fiesta took the third spot behind the nationwide Water Lantern Festival and Kutztown Folk Festival in Pennsylvania.

A panel of experts partnered with editors to pick 20 nominees. The winners were chosen by popular vote.

APD seeking suspect in sexual assault of boy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department is looking for a man they say was seen on video sexually assaulting a 5-year-old. Investigators say 29-year-old Joshua Vigil was a friend of the boy's family.

An arrest warrant was issued on Jan. 13, 2021, for Joshua Vigil. He is being charged for the criminal sexual penetration of a minor in the first degree, criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree, three counts of sexual exploitation of a child in the second degree (manufacturing) and sexual exploitation of a child (possession).

Restrictions relaxed for college sports; Lobos and Aggies can come home

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – College teams can now return to New Mexico to practice. Teams will have the ability to play out of the state and then hold full practices at home without quarantining.

"This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes and for our coaches to try and do what we want to do. We know how difficult these decisions come. I am extremely grateful for them, for us, and for everyone that's had a hand outside our university that has gotten us here today," said Eddie Nunez, UNM athletic director.

Albuquerque bowling alley burglarized

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The owners of an Albuquerque bowling alley are hoping someone recognized a man who broke into their building. Skidmore's Holiday Bowl on Lomas and Louisiana was broken into and burglarized. A surveillance video shows the man casually wandering around the place and take his time gathering up tools and equipment.

According to a news release, the owners, Gary and Eve Skidmore, say they've faced a tough year as the pandemic has forced them to be closed. The two are planning on opening their outdoor patio Thursday, Jan. 21. If you know anything about this incident, call the police.
