ALBUQUERQUE, N.M . (KRQE) – The debate coach at Rio Grande High is in jail Monday night, after allegations he raped a former student.

Monday, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 36-year-old Luis Chavez, an educational assistant and debate coach. Deputies say a 17-year-old boy reported having an on-going sexual relationship with Chavez. They say the boy claims it started on a school trip to Phoenix when he was given alcohol.

“That’s scary that you have your kids coming to school and you can’t even be comfortable knowing that you have teachers like that doing that to students,” said Kimberly Chavez who lives nearby the school.

In a criminal complaint, investigators say Chavez admitted to the relationship with the student, but thought since the boy was 17 he was a consenting adult.

Investigators say they are looking into whether Chavez had sex with any other students.

Albuquerque Public Schools says they will be firing him.
