The Albuquerque Police Department is requesting an exemption from Gov. Susana Martinez to keep from sending the department’s military members to the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to a spokesperson, Chief Michael Geier says the department is already low on officers, and losing any more would be a threat to public safety.

APD has 71 military members and estimates around 50 are in the National Guard.
