ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police officer involved in a crash that killed a little boy had been disciplined before for driving-related incidents.

Last month, Officer Jonathan McDonnell rammed into a family’s car on Eubank and Indian School on his way to a call.

The mother and her 9-year-old daughter were injured, the 6-year-old boy died.

KRQE News 13 obtained documents that show Officer McDonnell had been in trouble six different times; five for “preventable crashes” and in one case an “unauthorized pursuit.” McDonnell became an officer in 2008.

In 2009, Officer McDonnell collided with another car in the parking lot of a police substation. Then, in 2012 he struck another vehicle near Central Avenue and 55th Street.

Two years after that, he ran into a stop sign along Coors Boulevard. Then, last year Officer McDonnell rear-ended another police cruiser in northwest Albuquerque.

The Albuquerque Police Department deemed all four crashes “preventable.”

In 2015, the department suspended the officer for eight hours related to a preventable crash, but APD did not elaborate on the incident.

In some cases he was given letters of reprimand, in others he was handed brief suspensions. As for the unauthorized chase, that occurred in 2016 and Officer McDonnell was handed a 28-hour suspension.

Thursday, APD sent KRQE News 13 the following statement:

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office has an ongoing investigation into the cause and circumstances of this tragic collision. The department’s internal affairs division is also administratively investigating. That investigation will include the officer’s past driving history, as well as a review of any past administrative action taken.

Officer McDonnell was also injured in last month’s crash. The department said he suffered a broken femur.

No word on when BCSO will wrap up its investigation.
