APD hopes to strengthen relationship with Native American population

News

Albuquerque Police are reaching out to the city’s Native American population.

“This is a tool and a gateway to reach out to the Native American population who might not otherwise trust police departments,” Officer Michael Rico said.

Officer Rico is a member of the Navajo Nation. He says he often comes across people who don’t trust law enforcement, even if they are victims of crime.

The department says it wants to change that dynamic as part of its effort to practice more community policing.

APD says it’s speaking with tribes and social service providers about how to build better relationships with Native Americans in the community.
