The idea to purchase a new police helicopter for the Albuquerque Police Department is going to a committee.

City councilors on the Finance and Government Operations committee will consider the proposal to use $5.2 million of the General Fund to purchase the aircraft.

The current APD helicopter is 17 years old and needs to be replaced.

The technology on the H-120 is outdated and the helicopter has trouble taking off in hot temperatures.

The money to potentially purchase the new helicopter comes from additional non-recurring GRT revenue.
