ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The community is remembering a little girl and her mom who police say were victims of a murder-suicide.
Nhi Nguyen is the second child murdered within a week.
A vigil for the mother and daughter was held Thursday night.
Friends and community members wanted to honor 11-year-old Nhi, a girl who just started school in Albuquerque and had her whole life ahead of her.
The community mourning another death of a child is something no one here wants to have to do again.
“I would love if this generation is the last generation to ever have to attend a vigil. I want our kids to come to a park like this and enjoy and have fun,” said Frank Montoya, with Guardians of Children.
Just four days after Albuquerque police found 10-year-old Victoria Martens killed in what first responders described as the worst crime scene they’d ever seen, police found 11-year-old Nhi Nguyen and her mom Cam Thi To shot to death by To’s husband before police say he took his own life.
“You come to America to have a better future, a brighter future and a better opportunity,” said family friend Thu Doan.
Thu Doan knew the two well; their moms are from the same town in Vietnam.
Doan said the family moved to Albuquerque just a few months ago and Nhi spent most of her time at Doan’s house. She was excited about her new friends in fifth grade at S.R. Marmon Elementary.
“She was scared because the language barrier. But when she started school, her classmates were just so friendly,” said Thu Doan.
However, everything changed in an instant.
“My mom was supposed to pick them up to go with my mom to the mall and you know, things they do on a Sunday.”
Doan’s mother found Nhi and Cam shot to death in their apartment Sunday morning.
Doan is in disbelief that the opportunities and new life Nhi and her mom were looking forward to were taken.
The community is grieving together once again.
Family friends are now trying to arrange for Nhi’s 19-year-old brother and grandmother to travel to Albuquerque from Vietnam to say their final goodbyes.
Family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Nhi’s family to travel.
