Albuquerque teacher creates garden at school for students

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Some Albuquerque students are enjoying a new school garden after a fifth-grade teacher transformed an old plot of land.

A few years ago, this tidy garden at the back of Lavaland Elementary off of 57th Street in northwest Albuquerque was just a trash-strewn field. Now, it is filled with calabacitas and tomatoes.

“They get excited to see their crops being grown, and they love taking them home to their families, and learning how to use them,” said Shannon Ryan, teacher.

Kids from third through fifth grade meet twice a week to work on the garden.
