Albuquerque students surprised with college scholarships

Several hard-working New Mexico students got surprise scholarships for college presented by Albuquerque’s Mayor Tim Keller.

About 10 students from across the state learned they received scholarships from the Daniels Fund. The students thought they were invited to City Hall to hear Mayor Keller talk about why higher education was important.

However, then Linda Childears, president and CEO of The Daniels Fund, told them they had won. It left the students and their parents stunned.

“I was wondering why aren’t there anymore of us here. I’m psyched, I’m really really excited. I can’t quite believe it yet, but it’s an honor,” said Hannah Laga Abram of Santa Fe Waldorf School.

In all, 24 students from New Mexico received the Last Dollar Scholarships which fills the gap between what families can afford and what financial aid offers.
