ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque school PTA is being investigated for a possible misuse of funds.

Documents on the APS website reveal that North Star Elementary’s principal and associate superintendent went to the district’s internal audit department with concerns about the spending of money meant for a shade structure at the school. The principal says it appears the money was spent on other things. What’s unclear is if the money was stolen, or just misused.

An audit committee will meet Thursday to decide the next step, but APS confirms a criminal investigation has been initiated.

Recently, the chairperson of that audit committee, APS board member Analee Maestas, was accused of sending a cleaning crew to work at her house and paying for it with money intended for the charter school she runs.

Maestas maintains that didn’t happen.

At this point, APS says no one has raised any concerns about her serving on the audit committee.
